Who doesn’t love chocolate? There is a reason why we sell a chocolate-flavored coffee named Chocolate Dreams. One of the first recipes I posted on this blog was a chocolate cold brew recipe, but I’ve updated the method, and I think you will like this one. The secret is to use chocolate in every part of the drink and add a cold foam, which gives the perfect combination.
The chocolate tasting coffee beans (or ground coffee)
As I mentioned before, DripBeans sells chocolate tasting coffee beans, and they are naturally flavored. These beans give such a lovely natural, but still robust chocolate taste to the coffee, and it perfectly balanced. If you like chocolate and coffee, this might become your new favorite coffee. However, if you want to add the chocolate taste yourself to your ordinary coffee, you can. Either by adding cacao when brewing the coffee or adding chocolate syrup to the drink-ready cold brew. This won’t give the same result, but it will still taste nice and chocolatey.
The chocolate tasting cold foam
The cold foam which you add on top of the cold brew is made out of skimmed milk and a little bit of cacao. For the best result, use skim milk since it makes the best foam when cold foaming. You could, of course, use cream as well, but in my opinion, the fat cream is just too overpowering for cold brew. I even made a recipe some weeks ago where I made a foam without milk at all, since even milk can become a bit overpowering.
The chocolate itself
As always, the better ingredients, the better tasting coffee. So, if you are able, try to get some high-quality cacao powder. Or if you are using chocolate sauce, maybe try to make your own? It isn’t hard and will make all the difference. If you are using very cheap coffee, you probably don’t need to worry too much about the chocolate. But if you are using higher quality coffee (for example, DripBeans), it would be a shame to ruin it with the flavor of cheap industrial chocolate.
Okay, that’s enough info. Let’s jump into the recipe!
Cold Foam Chocolate Cold Brew
Equipment
- Cold brew maker or similar
- Milk foamer or french press
Ingredients
The cold brew coffee
- 32 oz Water
- 2 oz Coffee beans or ground coffee
(preferably Chocolate Dreams)
The chocolate cold foam
- 1 cup Skim milk
- 1 tbsp Cacao powder (or chocolate syrup)
- Optional: Chocolate sauce (for topping)
Instructions
The cold brew coffee
- Grind the coffee to a course grind size and add it to your cold brew maker. Add water on top and make sure all the coffee gets wet. See full guide here.
- Let the coffee brew for 12-24hrs (preferably in the fridge). Then, filter out all the ground coffee, and there you go!
The chocolate cold foam
- Start by foaming the milk. I recommend using skim milk since it makes a better foam. Use a milk foamer/frother for this, or use a french press. Start by foaming the milk and when it is almost done, add the cacao powder (or chocolate syrup)
- When the foam is done - it is time for serving. Add some ice to each glass and pour over the cold brew. Then, add the chocolate foam on top and top with chocolate sauce. Done!
